COA Purity vs. Identity: What's the Difference? (And Why It Matters)

Short answer: A Certificate of Analysis (COA) reports two separate things. Identity answers "is this the compound the label says it is." Purity answers "what percentage of the sample is that compound." A 99% pure sample of the wrong molecule is still a wrong molecule — purity doesn't rescue a failed identity check, and vendors that only advertise the purity number are showing you half the document.
Identity: is it even the right thing?
Identity testing — usually mass spectrometry (MS) — confirms the sample's molecular structure matches what's on the label. This is the question a purity percentage can't answer on its own. A lab result that reports "99.8% pure" without an identity confirmation is, technically, a very precise measurement of something — it just hasn't told you what that something is.
This matters more than it sounds like it should, because peptide misidentification isn't a hypothetical. Raw material suppliers occasionally ship the wrong compound, mislabel a batch, or substitute a cheaper analog. Identity testing is the check that catches that before it reaches a buyer.
Purity: what percentage is real?
Once identity is confirmed, purity tells you what share of the sample is that compound versus by-products, truncated fragments, or synthesis leftovers. This is usually measured via HPLC (a liquid chromatography technique), which separates a sample into its components and measures each one's proportion.
A higher purity number is better, full stop — but only after identity is settled. Purity is also where most of the marketing energy goes, because "99.9% pure" is a punchier headline than "identity confirmed, 97% pure." Both numbers matter; only one of them is usually advertised.
The trap: reading one number without the other

A full, trustworthy COA states both results plainly, names the testing method for each, and is signed by a lab whose report you can verify independently — not just view as a PDF on the vendor's own site. One more step: does the lot match?
Even a fully legitimate COA — real lab, both identity and purity confirmed, portal-verifiable — only tells you about the tested batch. The last step, and the one almost nobody actually does, is checking that the lot number printed on the COA matches the lot number on the vial that arrives. If they don't match, you're reading someone else's test result. This is one of the criteria we check when scoring a vendor in the index.
